Biển và Anh Vẫn Hát

On March 23rd, 2009 Written by John NGUYEN

This album released by Trung Tam Thuy Nga in March 2009. After a long hard-working year to put this CD together. Beside some of my new songs what I'm exciting to introduce to all my fans. I was so pleased to sing some new songs from other famous artist. I hope you all like them.

People often say, "Good things come to good people." Personally I haven't met many people as kind, committed, and dedicated as Trịnh Lam. A little over two years ago, Trịnh Lam was a contestant on Paris By Night's Talent Show. Fast forward to today, and he has solidified a very noteworthy position for himself within the Vietnamese music industry. But he hasn't gotten this far on kindness alone, he is fortunate to have been blessed with an amazing voice and composing skills. He used to be introduced as "the one who won the judge's choice" but I think that mentality is slowly disappearing and now people just know him from his consistent performances on the Paris By Night stage.

He interjects so many emotions in his singing and opens up his soul through his music - this is one of the reasons why he has become so successful in such a short time. People can relate and they comprehend his musical message. This week, Thuy Nga releases Trịnh Lam's second solo album and third album overall "BIỂN và ANH VẪN HÁT" That title alone sets the tone for the overall CD. Over the past few days, I have listened to the album several times in various settings. As with his first album, "TẠI SAO" I appreciate the reflective nature of the music. It is very clear that the twelve songs in this album were carefully selected. Of the twelve songs, five are new songs written and performed by Trịnh Lam himself.

As I listened to the album the thing that struck me the most was the common theme among the songs. It's as if he wanted to present the various aspects of love - a journey through the triumphs and deprivations of love. I especially enjoy the rawness of his voice in this album - it gave it more of a sense of yearning and desperation. The CD takes you through all courses of love - from happy to sad. Track #9 - "LÀM QUEN" talks of the awkwardness of a guy trying to meet a girl. The lyrics are very cute and subtle. The first thought that came to me when I heard this song, was this is the male perspective and counterpart to "EM GHEN" performed by BAO HAN, NHU LOAN and TU QUYEN in PBN 90.

As love progresses on, you realize you cannot live without that person; as in Track #11 - "NẾU VẮNG EM." Personally for me, this is one of my favorite tracks from melody to lyrics; it provides such a beautiful imagery of love and how much two people can love one another... "NẾU PHẢI CÁCH XA EM MỘT GIỜ, TRÁI ĐẤT NGƯNG QUAY, THỜI GIAN CŨNG NHƯ NGỪNG XOAY ..." And unfortunately sometimes love can take a turn for the worse leaving one person in desperation. As a line in Track #10 - "ĐÊM VẪN MONG CHỜ" reads "VÌ ANH CÒN YÊU NÊN ĐÊM VẪN MONG CHỜ" or Track #8 - "LẠC BƯỚC BÊN ĐỜI"... "XIN ĐỪNG LÀM ĐÔI TA THÀNH DĨ VÃNG, HÃY TRỞ VỀ ĐÂY CHO TRỌN GIẤC MƠ YÊU..."

The stages of love continue with anger as he yells out "KISS MY PAIN AWAY" in Track 6 - "TRẢ LẠI" a chacha influenced song. In some instances of love, even though you are together, you seem to be far apart and that is the overall message of "MAY KHOI" a performance we all anguished over in Paris By Night 95.

At the end of the day, for me, this album allows us to travel through the destinations of love and lets us realize that love constantly surrounds us and even when apart, love is still present. "BIỂN và ANH VẪN HÁT" is the perfect title and symbolism for this album as the waves coming in and out represent the fluid nature of love and despite everything; we will still hold love within us.

This album was truly an experience to listen to. The songs felt like conversations and dialogue, especially the lone duet with Trịnh Lam and Ngọc Anh in track #4 - "MỘT LẦN THÔI." I went back and watched Trịnh Lam's portion from Paris By Night 86 tonight, and both Nhật Ngân and Đức Huy who were on the judging panel commented on Trịnh Lam's use of vocabulary and how his lyrics had a meaning and how he just does not use random words to fill up a page. Because of his close attention and detail and because he goes over and above what is expected of him is why Trịnh Lam continues to garner fans and supporters from across the world. In addition, his personality and way of dissecting and executing a song make the song very unique and fresh. So for classics like "TRÁI TIM NGỤC TÙ" (Track #2) and "LỜI CUỐI CHO EM" (Track #7) - even though they have been performed by many others, Trịnh Lam is able to make us feel as if we are listening to them for the first time.

As a performer, he is confident while remaining subtle and gentle. He seeks to not only sing but to tell a story. I urge you to pick up a copy of "BIỂN và ANH VẪN HÁT" to delve into the sea of love. Swim with the beautiful sounds and music and be prepared to weather the storm for when love takes an unexpected turn.

This is Trịnh Lam's first solo album. Released by Thuy Nga only 6 months since he first appreared in Paris By Night 86 as one of the top 12 contestents. CD TẠI SAO was on of the top-selling album in 2007.
